about
Beneath it all
Kendra Scanlon created Subgrade Studio to bridge landscape architecture and product design with the creation of ritual objects in connection to land, culture, and geological history. She takes a social and material ecology lens to relay the subjective narratives of everyday objects. Kendra finds inspiration in riparian and coastal landscapes — places that need to heal from, adapt to, and endure the anthropogenic pressures of the contemporary world.
Kendra has been working with clay since the turn of the millennium (hell ya) and began crafting glazes from found materials in 2025. Her practice currently includes wild harvesting minerals for glazes, researching and documenting material origins, studies of Celtic symbology, and the use of commercial clay bodies.
